چکیده

Large-scale ocean‒atmosphere circulations (LOACs) have a pronounced effect on the near-surface wind speed (NSWS). In this study, we discussed contributions of zonal and meridional flows to NSWS changes identify possible association between Northern Hemisphere Annular Mode (NAM) over eastern China from 1979 2017. Results show that reduction in was mainly dominated by weakening component. NAM has considerable China. When exhibits positive phases, zonal-mean westerly weakens at low-to-mid-latitudes (10°–40°N). Meanwhile, descending prevail near 40°N, ascending persist 65°N troposphere. lower troposphere, there are northerly anomalies southerly mid-to-high latitudes (40°–70°N). The anomalous transport heat low high weaken north‒south air temperature gradient. decreased gradient East Asia reduces pressure surface, decreasing variations could dominate (32.0 ± 15.8)% annual mean NSWS. Nevertheless, contribution interannual component reach (45.0 12.9)%.

Regional climate impacts of the Northern Hemisphere annular mode.

The Northern Hemisphere annular mode (NAM) (also known as the North Atlantic Oscillation) is shown to exert a strong influence on wintertime climate, not only over the Euro-Atlantic half of the hemisphere as documented in previous studies, but over the Pacific half as well. It affects not only the mean conditions, but also the day-to-day variability, modulating the intensity of mid-latitude sto...

Can the Southern Hemisphere annular mode affect China winter monsoon?

[1] Many previous studies suggested that the anomalous Northern Hemisphere annular mode (NAM) and associated low boundary forcing (e.g., snow cover) greatly influence the China winter monsoon (CWM) variability on interannual to inter-decadal timescales. In this article, it is found that the Southern Hemisphere annular mode (SAM) also well correlates with the two observed CWM major modes, which ...

Baroclinic annular variability in the Northern Hemisphere

1 Large-scale variability in the Northern Hemisphere (NH) circulation can be 2 viewed in the context of three primary types of structures: 1) teleconnection patterns; 2) 3 a barotropic annular mode; and 3) a baroclinic annular mode. The barotropic annular 4 mode corresponds to the northern annular mode (NAM) and has been examined 5 extensively in previous research. Here we examine the spatial s...

The Pacific Center of Action of the Northern Hemisphere Annular Mode: Real or Artifact?

The leading empirical orthogonal function (EOF) of the sea level pressure (SLP) field, referred to as the Arctic Oscillation (AO) or Northern Hemisphere annular mode (NAM), consists of a dipole between the polar cap region and the surrounding zonal ring centered along 458N. Embedded within the outer ring are centers of action over the Euro-Atlantic and Pacific sectors in which SLP fluctuates in...

Arctic Ocean sea ice response to Northern Annular Mode-like wind forcing

[1] The response of the Arctic Ocean sea ice system to Northern Annular Mode-like wind forcing has been investigated using an ocean/sea ice general circulation model coupled to an atmospheric boundary layer model. A series of idealized experiments was performed to investigate the Arctic Ocean’s response to idealized winter wind anomalies on interannual to multi-decadal time scales. The sea ice ...
